Lady swimmers edge Milford to improve to 3-1
By Jay TurnerAfter a close loss to North Attleboro before the recent holiday break, the Canton High girls’ swim team got back to its winning ways last week, beating division opponent Milford 91-79 at the Blue Hills Regional pool.
The victory was the Bulldogs’ third in four meets thus far, and head coach Lori Mooney is confident that the girls will be able to improve upon their record over the second half of the season.
“Teams that have been out of our reach in the past are now much closer,” said Mooney. “We are showing our strength with extremely tight races and exciting finishes. With the talent of our returning swimmers and the added new depth, we should be in contention of improving our winning record greatly.”
Tied at the halfway point of the meet against Milford, the girls were able to surge ahead after finishing 2-3-4 in two different sprint events: the 100-yard freestyle behind Julia Guerini, Emily Breviglia, and Brianna Duserick, and the 100-yard breaststroke behind Amanda Walsh, Hailee Duserick, and Emilee Mercuri.
Other highlights for Canton included first-place finishes for Walsh in the 200 free, Katie LeDonne in the 500 free, and Tiffany Ha in the 100-yard backstroke, as well as second- and third-place finishes in the 400 free relay.
“The girls’ depth and dedication were major contributing factors in the win,” said Mooney. “Placing 2-3-4 in many events shows that we have not only the numbers, but the talent as well.”
The boys, meanwhile, had a much more difficult time with the Hawks, losing 101-66 to fall to 1-3 on the season.
“They have come with minimal experience in the sport yet continue to improve exponentially on a daily basis,” Mooney said of the 18-member boys’ team. “They are dedicated and very coachable. We are amazed at their progress thus far.”
Mooney was particularly impressed by the 200 IM relay team of Anthony Maffie, Mike Larsen, Daniel Lupo and Matt Foley, who finished second in a close race with a time of 1:54.06. The Bulldogs also picked up a victory in the 400 free relay (Sam Reimer, Matt Chamberlain, Foley, and Larsen), while veterans Kevin Wing and Steven Hellmuth both turned in a strong performance in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing second and third, respectively.
In the North Attleboro meet on December 19, both Canton teams lost, although Mooney still came away impressed.
On the boys’ side, Christian Hobbs won the 100-yard backstroke (1:18.43) and Kyle Hanscom won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:36.25). Canton also won the 400 free relay behind Reimer, Larsen, Foley and James Gilmore, while another foursome featuring Mike Noone, Jimmy Hamrock, Chamberlain, and Maffie finished second in the same event.
The girls also had a strong meet, highlighted by a clean sweep of the 50-yard freestyle, with Kim Frazier finishing first (28.55), Brianna Duserick placing second (30.3), and Breviglia placing third (30.75). Ha added a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a personal-best time of 1:09.68, and two Canton teams finished second and third in the 200 IM relay. The first team featured Guerini, Walsh, Shannon McLaughlin, and Frazier, and the second team consisted of LeDonne, Ha, Abbey Willis, and Shay Connolly.
This week, the Bulldogs were due to travel to Foxboro on Monday, followed by a home meet Friday against Mansfield beginning at 3 p.m.
