Red-hot boys’ hockey rolls past Stoughton, Taunton
By Jay TurnerThe Canton High boys’ ice hockey team inched closer to a playoff berth last week with back to back wins over Hockomock basement dwellers Stoughton and Taunton.
The red-hot Bulldogs, winners of four straight and six out of their last seven, are now just one win away from locking up a postseason spot with six games remaining.
Last Wednesday, Canton traveled to Stoughton to take on a scrappy Black Knights squad and skated away with a 4-0 victory.
Stoughton (4-11-1) managed to keep it close through the first two periods, trailing just 2-0 entering the third thanks to solid defense and excellent goaltending. But the visitors kept battling and ended up doubling their lead on goals by senior captain Ben Lodge and sophomore forward Bobby Mullaney.
Canton’s other two goals were scored by Kevin O’Brien, who deflected an Austin Zannino shot past the Stoughton goaltender late in the first, and sophomore Matt Lazaro, who notched his team-leading 12th goal off a pass from freshman Jerry Harding.
Backup goalie Tommy Chen saw some action in net for the Bulldogs, combining for a shutout with sophomore starter Justin Slocum — the Hockomock’s current leader in goals against average (1.66).
On Saturday, Slocum was part of yet another team shutout — this time with junior Sean Klimas — as the Bulldogs dismantled the Taunton Tigers 6-0 at Metropolis Rink.
Junior forward Brian Hagan was the star in this one, scoring two goals and assisting on a third. Sophomore John Femia also had a big game with one goal and two assists, while linemate Jimmy Jenkins collected a pair of assists. Harding, Mullaney, and senior captain Andrew Howlett also had goals for Canton in the win.
The Bulldogs, now 7-3-4, were due to travel to Foxboro on Wednesday to take on King Philip (6-8-1) and will then host Mansfield (9-2-1) on Saturday in a battle of Hockomock heavyweights. Next week, the team will play two more at home against nonleague opponents: North Quincy on February 12 and Lincoln-Sudbury on February 15.
