Girls’ hockey team adds two more wins
By Jeffrey CattelThe Canton High School varsity girls’ hockey team rebounded from last week’s loss with two wins this week, 2-0 against Walpole and 4-0 against Dover-Sherborn, bringing its season record to 4-1.
Senior Jackie Rooney scored both goals in the Walpole game, the first during the first period and the second with 45 seconds left in the game, sealing the Bulldog victory.
“Walpole has some great skaters and they make smart decisions with the puck,” coach Kelly Rider said of the team, which beat Canton in the state tournament last year. “I think our group effort and desire to do things well helped us get the win.”
In addition to the two goals, the girls’ played strong defensively, with senior Kelly White in goal for the shutout.
In the game against Dover Sherborn, the girls got off to a slow start, but rebounded after the first period, Rider said. Sophomore Haley Gaughan netted two goals and two assists, while fellow sophomore Stephanie Rizzitano scored another goal and freshman Jaime Cudmore scored her first goal of the season. Like the Walpole game, the Canton girls’ showcased their strong defense with junior Sarah Healey making crucial saves to ensure the team’s second shutout in a row.
“I think we are continuing to get better and better,” Rider said, reflecting on the past week. “And if we can continue this trend, I think we might be able to surprise a lot of people or teams as the season goes on.”
