CHS girls’ hockey team continues winning streak

By

The Canton High School varsity girls’ hockey team continued its winning streak this week, defeating Medfield 2-1 and King Philip 6-0 to bring its season record to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in league play.

Although the girls were down 1-0 in the first two periods in the game against Medfield, they fought back hard, netting two goals, one each by freshmen Meghan McKenna and Megan Lennon. The girls finished the game with a smart, strong defense to pull out the comeback win.

“This was one of our first close scoring, up-and-down games,” coach Kelly Rider said. “I was impressed with our team’s effort, determination, and ability to persevere.”

In the shutout against King Philip, ten different players had at least one point on the night. In ice hockey, a player earns a point when she scores a goal or makes an assist. With the help of a strong defense, junior Sarah Healey played in the net for the win, making it her third shutout of the season. \

Reflecting on the King Philip game, Rider said she was particularly proud of the way the girls handled themselves in the third period.

“I think that while they were able to dominate the game, [the girls] still showed a lot of respect for our opponents, who never gave up and continued to fight until the end of the game,” she said.
