Swim teams get back on track
By Jeffrey PicketteFor the last few weeks, members of the CHS girls’ and boys’ varsity swim teams have made plenty of individual progress, consistently improving their respective times in the pool. But these personal achievements did not always translate to team-wide success.
It did last Friday, however, as both teams faced Norton and Foxboro at Wheaton College. The girls beat Norton 60-34, but lost against Foxboro 54-40 in a meet that was decided by the last relay, according to head coach Lori Mooney. The boys were victorious in both of their match-ups, topping Norton 53-41 and Foxboro 57-27.
Entering this week, both teams shared identical 3-5 records.
“It’s thrilling for the kids,” Mooney said. “They came out of there really feeling like their hard work has paid off. Their individual successes amount to a team success, which really makes them jell together and makes them feel like a full-fledged team — even in an individualized kind of sport.”
On the girls’ side, Alison McHugh came in first place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 28.90 seconds and Andrea Salive returned from an injury to turn in a personal best time of 6:39.87 in the 500-yard freestyle.
On the boys’ side, James Frazier registered first place finishes in both the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.08 seconds and in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:11.33. Scott Buresh swam in the 500-yard freestyle for the first time and came in first place with a time of 6:47.08
The 200-yard individual medley relay team of Evan Leibovitz, John Whittemore, Mike Vartanian and Eduoard El Massih swam for the first time together and came in third place.
Both teams will face Stoughton in a meet on Friday. Mooney said Canton matches up well with its final three opponents — Stoughton, Dover-Sherborn and Franklin — before competing in the Hockomock League Championships on February 6.
“We should be very competitive against all three teams,” she said.
