Wrestlers bow to NA, Holliston, Hudson, but beat Watertown
By Canton CitizenThe Bulldog wrestling team begins the tournament portion of its season this weekend on a sour note. On Thursday evening the Canton grapplers lost to host North Attleboro 43-24. Ian Mills (pin), Kevin Connolly, Tyler Matt (pin), Darrius Wood (pin) and Kyle Hanlon all had victories for CHS.
“We bumped up our light weights in hopes of getting some wins,” coach Tom Bartosek said. “Our only hope of beating North Attleboro was going to our strength to compensate for our inexperience in the upper weights. It didn’t work, but it was worth the try.”
On Saturday the Bulldogs hosted Holliston, Hudson and Watertown. The mat men lost to Holliston 44-28, defeated Watertown 18-13, and then lost to Hudson 42-33.
Hanlon and Donovan Lewis were triple winners. Matt Kelly, Billy Rothkopf, Connolly, Will Alfano and Tyler Matt all had two victories on the day. Andrew Burkowski, Kevin Lopes, Jason Matt, Chris Parsons and Wood each had a single victory.
“We lost the matchups,” coach Brian Caffelle said. “Other than Billy Rothkopf’s win versus Hudson, we didn’t get the key wins that we needed. We must have been reading our press clippings from last week because we didn’t come to wrestle. We have the talent but not the consistency.”
The Bulldog wrestlers are currently 3-4 in the Hockomock League and 12-7 overall.
Chris Mills, David Rosenberg, James Kelly, Mark Kisil, Chris Parsons and John McCabe also had victories for Canton.
The grapplers were scheduled to visit Stoughton on Tuesday and then compete at the Hockomock League Tournament at Foxboro Saturday at 10 a.m.
