Canton High School swim teams thrive against Stoughton
By Jeffrey PicketteThe CHS girls’ and boys’ varsity swim teams kept their recent hot streaks going last Friday against Stoughton, with both squads downing the rival Black Knights.
The girls won 88-73, improving to 4-5 on the season, and have won two of their last three meets.
The boys, now winners of three in a row, beat Stoughton 89-69 to improve to 4-5 as well.
“Overall [it was] a very successful meet,” coach Lori Mooney wrote in an e-mail to the Citizen. “They showed some great endurance, technique and perseverance in their races. Being able to finish out races strong is something we’ve worked on all season, and they showed just how to do it [against Stoughton].”
“It was very exciting and very rewarding for the kids to see how little things can make a big difference,” she continued.
On the girls’ side, Canton swimmers Andrea Salive, Brianna Duserick and Isobel Heck came in first, second and third, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle. Emily Breviligia shaved eight seconds off her personal best time in the 100-yard freestyle.
And the 400-yard freestyle team of Eleni Papadopoulos, Sara Civian, Elena Kilduff and Heck came in second place with a time of 5:12.41.
For the boys, Chris LeDonne registered four first-place finishes, two in individual races and two as part of a relay team. James Frazier, John Whittemore and Matt Potts placed first, second and fourth, respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The boys’ meet went back-and-forth, according to Mooney, but Evan Leibovitz, Eduoard El Massih and Scott Rosenblatt helped to secure the win toward the end of the meet. Leibovitz came in first in the 100-yard backstroke, with El Massih and Rosenblatt not far behind, finishing third and fourth, respectively.
Heading into this week, Mooney said many swimmers are “on the cusp of making sectionals,” which is held later this month.
Both teams faced Dover-Sherborn on Wednesday and will take on Franklin today (Thursday). The Hockomock League Championships are this Saturday.
