Girls’ indoor track team shines at state meets
By Mike BergerThe CHS girls’ indoor track team continues to make its presence felt in state competition. Several girls made it to the top 25 in several events at the Boys’ and Girls’ Invitational on Saturday, January 30, and at the Coaches Elite Invitational (top 24 performers in each event in the state) on Sunday, January 31.
Both meets are precursors to state Class Meet competition. All runners and throwers who participated had to achieve certain times and throws to qualify.
On Saturday, junior Anna Amico ran a 7.67 in the 55-meter dash and finished ninth. Freshman Keishorea Armstrong ran the event with a time of 7.76 seconds and placed 15th. Both girls made it to the semis and placed in the top 24 out of 93 girls competing.
Senior Colleen Healey ran the 55-meter hurdles and also placed in the top 24 with a time of 9.58 seconds, finishing 18th out of 64 runners. Sophomore Vicky Tondre competed in the long jump and placed seventh with a jump of 15 feet, seven inches, and junior Kate D’Orazio qualified for states with a time of 1:47.45 in the 600 meter (37th place).
On Sunday, senior Samantha Smith placed fourth in the state in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.41. She was also a vital member of the 4×200 team — with Amico, Tondre and Armstrong — that also placed fourth with a time of 1:47.66.
In addition to her seventh-place finish of five feet, three inches in the high jump, junior Chidimma Nwankwo placed third in the shot put (35 feet, 11 and one quarter inches).
“Overall it was a great weekend with some amazing performances,” coach Kerri Oldmixon said. “And this is just where I want the girls to be as we head off into our postseason.”
On Sunday, February 7, the 4×200, 4×400, 4×50 and shot put teams will be heading to the state McIntyre relays, an all-divisions state meet. Saturday, February 13, the team will compete in the Hockomock Championship Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Reggie Lewis Center.
Boys’ team
Boys’ indoor track coach Chris Elgar said it was a challenging weekend for his team.
Matt Sidney just missed qualifying with his seventh-place, six-foot, three-inch jump. Elgar said Sidney had two great attempts at six feet, five inches, which would have moved him into top-four contention. “That is a height we are really confident he will achieve before season’s end,” Elgar said.
Elgar reported that Christian Bates and Jon Vaughn both struggled this weekend in the mile and 55-meter hurdles, respectfully.
“On the bright side,” he said, “if there is a time to get a ‘bad one’ out of the system, this is that time. For Jon, he was dealing with some lightheadedness and it was his first 55-meter effort this winter. You’d be surprised what kind of difference going from 50 yards with four hurdles at Franklin field house to 55 meters and five hurdles at the Reggie Lewis Center can do to your performance. We look to rebound and peak for championship season.”
This weekend the boys’ team will be represented at the McIntyre Relays as the 4×200, high jump and sprint medley relays all qualified in the earlier State Coaches Relay Competition. The 4×200 relay team finished second overall behind Vaughn, Jordan Guyton, Tyler Briggs and Marty Fauche. Also finishing second was the high jump relay of Sidney, Vaughn and Fauche. Finishing fifth was the sprint medley relay of Bates, Guyton, Fauche and Vaughn.
