LeDonne wraps up season with state swim meet

By

For the second consecutive season, Canton High junior swimmer Chris LeDonne represented the Bulldogs at the Division 2 Swimming and Diving State Championship meet.

LeDonne, who last year swam in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events, competed in the 100-yard butterfly at last Saturday’s meet, finishing 25th out of 27 swimmers with a time of 1:00.15.

“I know that Chris definitely feels he should have been able to swim faster,” assistant coach Chris Murtagh said.

Still, Murtagh was pleased with LeDonne’s effort, considering him a “role model” and “trend-setter” for the CHS boys’ swim team.

“These are the best swimmers in Division 2 throughout the whole state,” Murtagh said. “So, just qualifying [and] being able to compete at that level is incredible.”

Murtagh said LeDonne was plagued with a shoulder injury this season, yet he still managed to perform at a top-level. A versatile swimmer, LeDonne qualified for the Central/South Sectional Swimming and Diving Championships in five different events, choosing to swim in two at the February 14 meet.

“The fact that he qualified for so many events speaks to the quality of swimmer he is,” head coach Lori Mooney wrote in an e-mail to the Citizen.

“We feel that when he gets back to full strength for next season he will be having plenty of success and will place in both sectionals and states far past what he did this year,” Mooney continued. “Chris is a natural talent. He has worked hard but the strokes come easily to him. He has great form and is very coachable. He has the strength and natural speed that not everyone has.”
