Girls’ track team hopes to build on winter momentum

By

New CHS girls’ spring track coach Conor Sheehan is hoping the momentum and excitement from the winter season will continue on this spring. The winter squad compiled a 4-4 league record and sent several members to the Class C meet and two to the New England Championships.

The near 80-member spring squad, which has a large contingent of sophomores and freshmen, will have four captains: Anna Amico, Colleen Healey, Shirley Han and Lila Singer Berk.

The season was scheduled to get underway yesterday against league powerhouse Mansfield. Sheehan expects the teams’ high point scorers will be Amico and Vicky Tondre in the sprints, Healy in the hurdles and Chidimma Nwankwo and Amarachi Njoku in the throwing events. Canton may have the best 1-2 combination in the shot put behind Nwankwo and Njoku.

Sam Smith, one of the winter team’s high point scorers and a New England Championship participant, has decided to play lacrosse.

Sheehan said he is hoping for good improvement in the distance events, which will be coached by Jean Corrigan and Peter Boucher.

This is Sheehan’s first varsity head coaching position; he served as assistant track coach for two seasons and has been an assistant football coach. Canton is scheduled to host Sharon on Tuesday, April 6, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
