Man About Canton: Easter Egg Hunt is Saturday at Pequitside
By Joe DeFeliceDID YOU KNOW…
The Recreation Department will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt at Pequitside Farm on Saturday, April 3 at 1 p.m. sharp! The Easter Bunny will be there and there will be refreshments for attendees. Also, the Recreation Department is currently holding registration for girls’ softball (instructional, junior and senior leagues). Register at the Recreation office at 92 Pleasant Street.
Today, April 1, is April Fools’ Day, and MAC acknowledges there are a lot of fools around, and it’s only right they have a special day each year they can call their very own. Fools come in all sizes, shapes, ages, occupations, and educational levels. It doesn’t matter whether or not they are college graduates. In fact, some of the most foolish people you and I know are college graduates.
Fools are generally gullible, and they fall for some of the ridiculous tricks and situations on this day of theirs. Most of us recognize their shortcomings, and we delight in playing silly tricks on them so we can point our fingers, laugh and say “April fools!”
So there are a lot of April fools around, and that, unfortunately, includes MAC. As a matter of fact, MAC has to confess that at one time or another he has fallen for one of these ruses, and thus, has been embarrassingly branded an April fool; but April Fools’ Day actually belongs to all of us, so enjoy it.
Going on to other matters, many of our readers belong to BJ’s Wholesale Club, which was founded in 1984. Recent news reports relate that after 26 years, BJ’s corporate headquarters will be moving from Natick to Westboro. The company operates 187 stores in 15 states, and its 2009 sales amounted to $9.95 billion.
Congratulations to the Canton High School boys’ hockey team and Coach Brian Shuman for winning the state’s Division 2 hockey championship by defeating a strong team from Newburyport at the TD Bank North Garden by a score of 4-2. The Bulldog champions, with a 19-3-2 record, were outstanding.
According to a chart in the Boston Globe, 29 Canton police officers receive an average of $10,022 as an educational bonus under the “Quinn Bill.” Unfortunately, it now appears the state cannot pay its half of the payment due to lack of money.
MAC sends our best wishes and congratulations to Josephine Sylvester of Rubin Court, who celebrated her 100th birthday on March 19. It was a great accomplishment for this charming lady who has five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Despite widespread agreement that they are quaint and dress up the downtown business district, the selectmen have decided by a 3-2 vote to turn off those nice lights that decorate the downtown trees, but they agreed to re-light them on special occasions and celebrations, such as the Fourth of July or the downtown block party. Now if the selectmen would only do something about correcting those light post banners that were incorrectly installed and look terrible. It will make MAC and others happy!
The Canton Recreation Department is advertising a number of temporary summer employment opportunities. If you are interested, you can apply at the Recreation Office at 92 Pleasant Street. Applications will close on April 16. More information is available by calling 781-821-5030.
Canton veterinarian Paul Andreani and Canton Animal Control Officer Paul Bastable will hold a rabies clinic at the DPW garage on Bolivar Street on Saturday, April 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A rabies vaccination will cost $12 and blood tests will be available for an extra charge.
Canton Police Chief Ken Berkowitz and K9 officer Scott Brown will be running in this year’s Boston Marathon to raise money for their charity, “Cops for Kids with Cancer.” MAC wishes them the best of luck.
Finally, to the delight of just about everyone, it appears the Canton selectmen have managed to balance next year’s FY11 municipal budget without major cuts or layoffs. MAC wishes the school department could find a way to do the same.
If you have left some important things in your life undone, go back and finish the job, and the future will open up for you. Every unfinished task, big or small, weighs on your enthusiasm to start another job.
This is all for now folks; see you next week.
