The Canton High School boys’ lacrosse team kicked off its season last week with a convincing win over a fellow Division 3 opponent. The Bulldogs rolled over Dedham, dominating the visitors 15-2.

The scoring came from all over the field as Canton saw 11 different players tally at least one point. Freshmen Nick O’Connor, Pat Ward, Kurt Leavitt, and JC Marcone all recorded their first career points in the match.

The defense, led by goalkeeper Devin Costa, was stellar, holding Dedham to only two goals. The backline of Nick Sullivan, Chris Thomas and Ethan Winchell were extremely steady in front of Costa and shut down the Dedham attack.

“All of the other schools in our conference are Division 2 schools, so it was nice to get a game against a Division 3 school like ourselves,” said coach Bill Bendell. “It shows a lot that we were able to really outplay them as much as we did.”

Canton followed up this match with a Thursday night faceoff against visiting Foxboro. It was an intense atmosphere with a large crowd of students and youth lacrosse players on hand.

Unfortunately the crowd was quieted quickly as Foxboro jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. The Bulldogs were able to get back in the game, thanks to senior captain Kyle Leavitt’s three goals and points from Andrew Reardon, TJ Lennon, Jimmy Paschal, and Brandon Goodwin, but came out on the losing end.

“The team did a good job in trying to crawl back into this one, but Foxboro was just too much for us on that night,” Bendell said.

Monday the Bulldogs hit the road for the first time and took on North Attleboro in a match-up that went down to the wire. Canton started the game off a little flat but was able to regroup and tie up the game near the end of regulation to send the match into overtime.

Early into the overtime period Paschal scored the game winner on a beautiful lefty shot taken from the outside. Tyler Briggs led the offense with three goals and one assist while Costa held things down in the back with 12 saves.

“It is always nice to go away from home and get your first road win of the season,” Bendell said. “I’m proud of how we were able to battle back and win this one 11-10.”
