Girls’ tennis team 3-0 after first week
By Jeffrey PicketteLed by a dominating string of performances from freshman first singles player Keishorea Armstrong, the CHS girls’ tennis team is off to a 3-0 start this season after beating Hockomock League foes Sharon, Franklin, and Oliver Ames last week.
Armstrong won all three of her matches, as did second singles player Micaela Nannery and the first doubles team of Carol Berman and Tilly Golledge.
“It is huge for us to have a start like this,” head coach Sheila Conneely wrote in an e-mail to the Citizen. “Our eyes are definitely on making, and doing well, in the tournament.”
The team kicked off its season last Monday with a 3-2 win over Sharon at home, marking Canton’s first victory over the Eagles since 2006. In her high school debut, Armstrong dropped the first set 6-3, but battled back to win the final two sets 6-2, 6-2.
“Keishorea’s ground strokes, speed and powerful serve proved too much for her opponent, and it was a fun match to watch — really high level tennis,” Conneely wrote in an e-mail.
A “strong serve and powerful forehand” helped Nannery cruise to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over her opponent, and Berman and Golledge won 6-2, 6-2 at the first doubles position.
Canton beat Franklin 5-0 last Wednesday on the road and beat Oliver Ames 5-0 last Thursday at home.
Against Franklin, Nannery fought off two match points in the second set, recovering to beat her opponent 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 in a two-and-a-half hour marathon match. Freshman third singles player Eleni Padadopoulos earned her first victory in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Against Oliver Ames, Armstrong continued to impress, winning 6-2, 6-0. The first doubles duo of Berman and Golledge dropped their first set 6-2, but bounced back to take the match, winning the next two sets 6-2, 7-5.
After playing against Sharon and Franklin, the second doubles team of Eva Panciocco and Kendall Sceviour departed for the CHS German Exchange Program. In their place, Divya Harpalani and freshman Aimee Pina earned a 6-2, 6-4 win against Franklin.
The freshman trio of Armstrong, Padadopoulos and Pina combined to go 6-1 last week.
This week, the team was scheduled to play at Foxboro on Monday and home against North Attleboro on Wednesday. Canton will host Stoughton today (Thursday).
