Girls’ track team edges Sharon for first win

By

The CHS girls’ outdoor track team had a mixed week of results, as the squad came out on top in a close meet against Sharon 73-63, but fell to Franklin 84-52.

Helping to clinch the Sharon victory was Mellyn Costello’s second place in the 100-meter hurdles and Radiya Buchanan’s performance in the 400-meter race. Chidimma Nwankwo and Amarachi Njoku were dominant in the shot put and discus.

“Sharon was a real barn burner and the girls performed beyond what we could have expected, many of them beating their previous best times or distances,” head coach Conor Sheehan said. “Franklin is one of the powerhouses in the league and our goal for that meet was to get as many of the girls qualified for the state meet as we could. The girls, in pushing themselves to meet those qualifying standards, had actually kept the meet closer then I ever could have imagined.”

Against Sharon, Anna Amico came back from an injury to run a state-qualifying time in the 100-meter dash. Buchanan ran a blistering 63 seconds in the 400, which was also a state-qualifying time. Buchanan also qualified in the triple jump with a distance of 33 feet and a quarter inch.

Colleen Healey took first with a 16.8-second time in the 100-meter hurdles, and Lila Singer-Berk, Lauren Winter, and Kristina Stuopis all ran well in the two mile.

In the Franklin meet, Healey qualified for states in the 400 hurdles and the 4×100 team of Shirley Han, Ashleigh Hicks, Vicky Tondre, and Amico crushed the state-qualifying time by running a 51.8. The 4×400 relay team of Jenny Sidney, Buchanan, Zarina Brune, and Healey qualified for the states with a time of 4:28.9

Nwankwo and Njoku are proving to be a tag team of dominance in the shot put and discus. Njoku won the shot put in both meets and placed second in discus in both meets. Nwankwo won discus in both meets — she threw 109 feet, four and a half inches against Franklin.

The girls are 1-2 overall and look to get to the .500 mark today, April 15, at Oliver Ames.
