Softball team falls to Sharon, beats OA

After having three games postponed due to the hammering rain in late March , the Canton High girls’ softball team started the season last week with a home-opener loss, followed by an exciting come-from-behind victory, also on the home field.
Monday, April 5, Canton was shut out by visiting Sharon 3-0. Junior Olivia Kenyon pitched well, but all of Sharon’s runs were unearned and all driven home in the third inning.
“We match up with Sharon pretty well, but we just weren’t hitting,” coach Danielle McNamara said. “I’m confident we can beat them the next time around, and I think between the weather and having three games postponed we simply didn’t get off to a good start.”
The Canton girls weren’t the least bit deterred, however, and landed a beautiful win on April 8 against Oliver Ames.
With a deficit of 3-0 in the second inning, sophomore Olivia Murphy blasted a triple and her sister, freshman outfielder Julia Murphy, doubled two batters later, which helped set the stage for Canton’s comeback.
In the fourth inning Julia Murphy hit a single, followed by a single by sophomore outfielder Cady Kelly. Junior third baseman Michelle Whelan hit next to right field to load up the bases, then Kenyon hit deep into left field to bring in two runners.Kenyon pitched five strikeouts and Canton won by a score of 5-4.
“We have a really, really good offensive team, and that’s our strength,” McNamara said. “But our defense is also strong, especially our pitching. Olivia (Kenyon) does a nice job keeping us in the game and offensively we have a very good line of hitters, and I think they’ll score a lot of runs for us this year.”
Canton’s home game against Boston Latin will be made up May 26; Canton at Mansfield will be made up May 6; and Canton at Franklin will be made up April 21, during school vacation.
