Both track teams lose to Oliver Ames
By Mike BergerAlthough the scores were close, both Canton High School outdoor track teams came out on the losing end of a dual meet against Oliver Ames last week. The boys lost 78-58 while the girls fell 76-60.
This was the first meet that both the boys’ and girls’ relay teams swept their events. The boys’ 4×100 team consisted of Jon Vaughn, Derek Seto, Marquis Rodriguez, and Jordan Guyton. The 4×400 team also won behind Chris Boughter, Marty Fauche, Cam Humber, and Christian Bates.
Vaughn won the 100-meter hurdles and came in second in the long jump, while Guyton placed second in the 200 and discus.
The boys’ 400-meter hurdling team swept the event behind Bates, Nikita Amelchenko, and Tom Kerikas. Other victories were recorded by Huber in the 800 and Matt Sidney in the high jump.
Other point scorers included: Rodriguez, 2nd, 100m; Mike Bronstein and Matt Kelly, 3rd and 4th, mile; Boughter and Obi Nwankwo, 2nd and 3rd, 400m; Fauche, 3rd, long jump; Jared Hobbs and Bates, 2nd and 3rd, triple jump; Marc Abelard, 3rd, high jump; and Dan Alexander, 3rd, shot put.
In the girls’ meet, first-place finishes were turned in by Chidimma Nwankwo in the shot put and discus, Anna Amico in the 100-meter dash, and Mellyn Costello in the 100-meter hurdles. Both girls’ relay teams also were victorious in the 4×100 and 4×400 events.
Second-place finishes were recorded by Molly Phalan in the 100-meter dash, Radiya Buchanan in the 400, Vicky Tondre in the 200, and Amarachi Njoku in the shot put.
Both teams are now 1-2 and are hoping to get back on the winning track with a home meet against Foxboro on Tuesday, April 27, followed by an away meet on April 29 against North Attleboro.
