Girls’ lax takes 2 of 3 to continue strong start
By Jeffrey CattelAfter finishing the first week a perfect 3-0, the CHS girls’ lacrosse team experienced its first loss of the season last week, falling to King Philip 14-7. The girls won the week’s two other games in decisive fashion, 20-15 over Foxboro and 19-15 over Oliver Ames.
“We are still playing catch-up with our players who are missing because of the Germany trip,” coach Chris Murtagh said. “King Philip has been a very good team in the league and being shorthanded put us behind.”
Murtagh said the underclassmen have done an impressive job to step up and fill the voids left by the missing upperclassmen.
Senior captain Ally Boudreau was the Bulldogs’ top scorer for the second week in a row with 15 goals. Other top scorers included senior captain Nicole Marcone with nine goals, junior Sarah Healey with eight, and sophomore Michelle McNeil with seven.
Senior Kori White scored two goals in the game against Oliver Ames before learning she had fractured her foot. Murtagh said he was impressed with how well White had played at the beginning of the season, especially considering that the fracture occurred during the second game of the season against Ursuline.
“She played four games with a fractured foot,” Murtagh said. “This is a big loss for us.”
Despite the noticeable absences of many of the team’s starters, the girls are still in the same position they were at this point in the season last year with a record of 5-1.
Murtagh said he would not like to repeat the finish to the season that the girls experienced last year, which resulted in a final record of 6-9-2.
“We’re still maintaining our dream of postseason play,” he said. “The girls are working as hard as they can to reach it.”
The girls had only one game this week against the always dangerous Franklin Panthers.
Murtagh said the team’s goal is to keep up with Franklin as much as possible and work on maintaining the high caliber of play they’ve shown in the season’s previous six games.
