CHS baseball team drops 2, including close loss to Wayland

By

It’s the little things that often determine if a team wins or loses, and it’s the little things that are troublesome for the 1-7 CHS baseball team.

The Bulldogs dropped two last week, losing to a strong Abington team 15-6, and edged by Wayland  4-3.

Having lost three games by one run, Saturday’s starter against Wayland, Mike Hallett, was again the victim of a one-run loss. In three games, Hallett has let up seven runs, but only three have been earned.

Canton had six hits, including two by David Corcoran, and three stolen bases. The team relied on walks, errors and stolen bases to score its runs.

Hallett had two troublesome innings, again victimized by some unearned runs. A wild pitch allowed Wayland to score its first run, and a sacrifice fly brought in another for a 2-0 Wayland lead in the third inning,

Canton squeezed across a run in the fifth on a single by Matt Bernstein, a sacrifice bunt by Corcoran, and then a wild throw to third on a Bernstein stolen base attempt.

Down 2-1 in the top of the seventh, Hallett struck out the first batter and got the second batter on a ground out. But a single, a wild pitch that advanced the runner two bases, and an infield error led Wayland to a 3-1 lead. A stolen base and an infield hit gave Wayland an insurance run, which they needed when Canton staged a late rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Hallett led off with a single and pinch hitter Andrew Vinciguerra reached base when the Wayland right fielder dropped a fly ball. Hallett then came home on a wild pitch and Bernstein brought Canton to 4-3 with an RBI ground out.

Canton received some good defensive play from catcher Matt Nichols, who threw out two runners, and good defensive work by Kevin Rooney at third and Joey Wilkinson at first. Stolen bases were recorded by A.J. Waterman, Rooney, and Bernstein.

CHS head coach Tom Healy said Canton did not play well in any facet of the game against Abington as the Green Wave scored early and often. Canton was limited to five hits.

The Bulldogs play a very busy schedule this week, facing King Philip at home on April 26, at Mansfield on April 28, and home against Sharon on Friday, April 30. All games start at 3:30 p.m.
