With a mid-season record of 4-3, and two postponements yet to be made up, the CHS varsity softball team is driving in significantly more runs and gaining momentum, and coach Danielle McNamara said the team has already earned a ticket to the postseason tournament.

On Monday, April 12 at Franklin, Canton played well but it wasn’t quite enough as the Bulldogs came home with a 4-2 loss.

“We left too many runners on base — nine altogether — and could only score two runs,” McNamara said.

The first run came in the fifth inning when Cady Kelly was hit by a pitch. Colleen Myers hit a ground ball to third and the third baseman overthrew it, scoring Kelly on a single by Julia Murphy. Canton’s second run came in the sixth inning when Allie Jones led off with a double, moved to third on a single by Sam Sullivan and then scored on a single by Kelly.

Franklin scored three runs in the first inning and one in the fifth.

“Our defense did a nice job for most of the game against a very good offensive team, but we couldn’t get the runs we needed,” McNamara said.

Hanover was a different story, as Canton returned home with a sensational 10-4 victory.

“The bats came alive for us, with everyone contributing to this win,” McNamara said.

Canton scored two runs in the first inning with hits from Kelly White and Olivia Kenyon, and Olivia Murphy bringing both in with a triple. Hanover came back to score two of their own runs in the bottom of the first with a homerun. However, everyone starting hitting in the third inning with hits from Michelle Whelan, Kenyon, Olivia Murphy, Sullivan, Kelly, Myers and a three-run-homer by Julia Murphy. Kenyon also hit a solo homerun in the fourth inning. Kenyon was 5 for 5 on the day with 2 RBIs, Julia Murphy was 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs, Whelan went 4 for 5, and Sullivan was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs.

“This was a great win for us,” McNamara said. “We had 17 hits altogether, which is a huge improvement since the beginning of the season when we only had one hit against Sharon in our first game. As long as we continue to stay aggressive at the plate we can win many more games. We are all very excited to have clinched a spot in the tournament already.”
