Girls’ lax struggles against 2 of the Hock’s elite

By

The CHS girls’ lacrosse team struggled over April vacation, losing first to Franklin 15-5 and then to Mansfield 14-6, bringing their overall season record to 5-3.

“The scores don’t really show the caliber of play from the girls,” head coach Chris Murtagh said of his team’s effort last week. “They were running with the other team from goal line to goal line.”

Franklin and Mansfield are two of the top teams in the Hockomock League.

“Our goal is to play as best as we can against these teams, and stay with them as long as possible,” Murtagh said.

The Bulldogs looked good out of the gate, scoring the first goal in both games. They struggled, however, when it came to endurance. Murtagh said this is to be expected when playing shorthanded with only two subs.

“The girls have been asked to play beyond anyone’s expectations,” he said.

The absence of many key starters because of the Germany trip has allowed several underclassmen to showcase their talents.

Murtagh said sophomore Emma Compagna and freshman Meghan Lennon have done an incredible job filling any necessary void, both on offense and defense.

The girls have now reached the halfway point in the season and will start to play Hockomock League teams a second time, beginning with Foxboro tomorrow afternoon at home.

“Everyone knows who the good players are, who we have to watch out for,” Murtagh said. “It definitely changes the dynamic of the game.”

Looking to the second half of the season, Murtagh said the team’s record feels like déjà vu. Last year, the girls started off strong with five wins but amassed just one more victory the rest of the way. However, Murtagh said he is confident the girls have the ability to improve upon last season’s results and make it to postseason play.
