Boys’ lax bows to Mansfield, Foxboro

The Canton High School boys’ lacrosse team knew it was in for a tough week. Struggling of late and falling victim to injury, the Bulldogs were facing off against two teams that were red hot and sitting atop the Hockomock League standings.
Canton put forth strong efforts in both matches but was unable to reverse its fortune, falling to Mansfield 9-4 on Monday and Foxboro 11-2 on Friday.
The game against Mansfield was close throughout with both teams trading goals in the early going. The Bulldogs put up a strong fight but could not stay with Mansfield down the stretch. Even though Canton was outscored in the second half, the Bulldogs were not outplayed by a large margin.
“The scoreboard at the end of the game read 9-4,” head coach Bill Bendell said. “This game, though, was much closer than that.”
Middie Jimmy Paschal played what his coach called his best game of the year, leading the team in groundballs with five. Joe Compagna led the scoring with two goals and was constantly around the Mansfield crease.
Andrew Reardon, Matt Draper, and Max Kamin completed the scoring with a goal apiece. Chris Thomas led the defensive effort in front of freshman goalie Pat Ward, who was strong in net.
While the Bulldogs were able to stick around in their game with Mansfield, they were not capable of doing the same against Foxboro, as the game got out of hand quickly. Foxboro found the net early and often and Canton was never able to find a solution to stop the onslaught put forth by Foxboro.
“Foxboro outplayed us at every facet of the game,” Bendell said. “They are a tremendous team so it is no surprise why they are in first place in the league.”
Senior defenseman Brad Coffey played strong in the back and led the defensive effort along with Brandon Goodwin, Chris Haidul, Andrew Mansfield, and David Mansfield.
The shining moment in this one, however, came on what may have been the play of the season for the Bulldogs. Senior captain Reardon scored a highlight reel goal off a remarkable feed from freshman JC Marcone.
“It was an unbelievably impressive goal, an absolute rocket from Andrew,” said Bendell. “We’ll call it a nice diversion for an otherwise difficult day.”
Kamin scored the other lone goal for the Bulldogs, assisted by Matt Malloy.
Canton was hoping to get back on the winning track Monday night when they faced off against North Attleboro — a team the Bulldogs beat earlier this year in an overtime thriller.
