Boys’ tennis team looks to rebound after tough week
By Jeffrey PicketteAfter starting the season 3-3, the CHS boys’ tennis team went winless last week, dropping matches to King Philip, Mansfield and Sharon.
But, even in defeat, head coach Leo Nelson said his team had some “bright moments.”
“We stood strong and took a great deal of matches to the third set,” Nelson wrote in an e-mail to the Citizen.
Last Monday against King Philip Canton fell 4-1, but the second doubles team of Kevin Wong and Max Weiner gutted out a three-set victory, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
Last Thursday at Mansfield, the first doubles team of Brian Kodzis and Matt Buckley won their match, giving Canton its only point in a 4-1 loss.
While the Bulldogs lost 5-0 to Sharon last Friday, Nelson was impressed with the performance of his second doubles team. Matt Garcia and Alex Flekkel were filling in for Wong and Weiner and nearly beat their opposing doubles tandem.
“We need to focus on our second serves and staying aggressive,” Nelson said. “Hopefully the seniors realize this is their last time to shine, so they need to show up and make a statement.”
At 3-6, Canton looks to rebound this week with four scheduled matches. On Monday the team traveled to Franklin and on Wednesday the team hosted Oliver Ames. The team looks to avenge its loss to Mansfield today (Thursday) at home before traveling to Cohasset in a non-league match on Friday.
CHS tennis players set to compete in individual tournament
This weekend, seven Canton High tennis players are set to take part in the South Sectional Individual Tournament.
Sam Biggers, first singles player for the boys’ team, will travel to Wellesley for the boys’ singles bracket, according to head coach Leo Nelson.
Meanwhile, first singles player Keishora Armstrong and second singles player Micaela Nannery will represent the girls’ team in the girls’ singles bracket, and the first doubles team of Carol Berman and Tilly Golledge and the second doubles team of Divya Harpalani and Aimee Pina will represent Canton in the girls’ doubles bracket, according to head coach Sheila Conneely. The matches will take place in Hingham.
The individual tournament comes on the heels of a busy week for both teams as both squads were scheduled to play four team matches this week.
