Canton High baseball team still seeking elusive 2nd win

By

The CHS baseball team is still searching for its second win of the season and head coach Tom Healy said the problem is a lack of consistent and clutch hitting.

The Bulldogs lost to King Philip 5-3 in extra innings, were beaten by Mansfield 10-4, and were edged by Sharon 4-2 to fall to 1-10 overall.

The team got a strong performance Monday against KP from starter Joey Wilkinson, who hurled nine innings and gave up five runs (three unearned) on six hits while walking no one and striking out four batters.

Junior center fielder AJ Waterman had two hits and an RBI, and teammate Tom Nickel added two hits. The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on base hits by Andrew Vinciguerra, Matt Bernstein, and Kevin Rooney, but KP came back with a pair of runs to win in extra innings.

On Thursday against Mansfield, Bernstein struggled on the mound, giving up nine runs and nine hits over four innings.

He was relieved by John Ruane, who pitched two innings and allowed one run on three hits. Catcher Matt Nichols and Rooney each had two hits and Rooney had two RBIs.

On Friday, Mike Hallett pitched well overall but also struggled at times against Sharon, allowing four runs on nine hits in five innings. He struck out three while walking two. Nickel pitched two innings of solid relief, but the Bulldog bats were limited to three hits. A hit by David Corcoran drove in the two Canton runs.

“We are starting to hit, but we are hitting right at people,” Healy said. “Right now, we aren’t getting the big hit. Against Mansfield we had the bases loaded three times but only got two runs out of it.”

The Bulldogs had three games this week, including an away game against Franklin on Monday and a home game yesterday versus Oliver Ames.

Today the team will host Mansfield at Gibson Field at 3:30 p.m.
