CHS girls’ tennis team salvages week with a win over Sharon
By Jeffrey PicketteOff to its best start since the 2006 season, the CHS girls’ tennis team returned to action last week after a ten-day break, but stumbled, losing two out of three matches.
Canton is now 6-3 on the season after falling to King Philip on Monday and to Mansfield on Thursday, before recouping to beat Sharon last Friday on the road.
Head coach Sheila Conneely admitted that it was a “tough week” for the team.
The week started with a 5-0 road loss to King Philip, a team that has won 53 consecutive Hockomock League matches according to Conneely. Third singles player Eleni Pappadopoulus was the lone Canton player to win a set, although Conneely noted that first singles player Keishorea Armstrong turned in an “impressive, competitive performance” against her opponent. Armstrong lost 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 in a match that included many deuces and long rallies. Canton lost to Mansfield 3-2 with Pappadopoulus earning a 7-5, 6-3 win at third singles and the second doubles team of Divya Harpalani and Aimee Pina winning their match in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
In a battle of freshmen first singles players, Armstrong lost 6-3, 6-4 to Mansfield’s Emma Yeransian. Second singles player Micaela Nannery fell in three sets, as did the first doubles team of Carol Berman and Tilly Golledge.
Canton was able to snap this two-match losing skid, however, with a 4-1 win at Sharon, sweeping the season series against the Eagles for the first time since 2006.
Armstrong and Nannery both rolled in straight sets in their respective singles matches, while the doubles duos of Berman and Golledge and Harpalani and Pina each dropped the first set of their respective matches but battled back to take the match, winning the second and third sets.
This week is a busy one for the Bulldogs with four scheduled matches. The team played Franklin on Monday and Oliver Ames on Wednesday and will look to avenge its loss to Mansfield today (Thursday) before facing non-league Fontbonne Academy on Friday.
