Girls’ lax nets back-to back wins
By Jeffrey CattelThe CHS girls’ varsity lacrosse team returned to its winning ways last week with a pair of solid victories, beating Foxboro 18-6 at home and then North Attleboro 18-11 on the road. The team’s record on the season now stands at 7-3.
“Last year we finished with only six wins, so we’re already ahead of last year’s record,” head coach Chris Murtagh said.
Senior captain Ally Boudreau continued in her role as the team’s top scorer with 13 goals — a spot she has held since the beginning of this season. Other top scorers included sophomore Emma Compagna with five goals and freshman Meghan McKenna with four.
Murtagh said he was pleased with the girls’ performance against both Hockomock League teams.
The Bulldogs knew Foxboro would prove a worthy adversary after the girls had a close game against the Warriors earlier in the season. Murtagh attributed the team’s success in the rematch to improvements made in its transition game. In practice, the players worked on moving the ball from the defensive to the offensive side of the field with as few throws as possible, but still in a controlled manner, Murtagh said.
In the game against North Attleboro, the girls came out strong but struggled at the beginning of the second half, allowing NA to make progress on the Bulldogs’ otherwise impressive lead.
“Looking back, the girls realize they have to maintain pressure throughout the game, not just in the first half,” Murtagh said.
Now, the girls are focused on continuing their successes in the second half of the season to reach their two goals of winning more than ten games and making it to the tournament.
“The team has a great core of senior girls,” Murtagh said. “We’d like to send them off with as many victories as possible.”
The Bulldogs were scheduled to host Sharon last night and will next play on Monday, May 10, at King Philip, followed by a home game against Oliver Ames on May 13.
