Softball team beats Sharon, bows to KP, Mansfield

Working hard, demonstrating strong team spirit and remaining focused are key factors in a successful team, but the elements didn’t come together for the Canton High varsity softball team last week as the Bulldogs suffered two overwhelming shutouts followed by a 1-0 win to finish up the week.

“I’m still a little unsure of what to say about last week,” coach Danielle McNamara said. “We did beat Sharon on Friday 1-0, and the big highlight was Olivia Murphy leading off the seventh inning with a double, moving to third on a ground ball by Allie Jones and scoring on a misplayed ground ball hit by Sam Sullivan. The defense played great in the field that day as well.”

Monday’s game at King Philip and Wednesday’s home game against Mansfield were devastating 24-0 and 16-0 losses, respectively.

“King Philip is really just a powerhouse team — they can all hit extremely well and they just attacked the ball that day,” McNamara said. “We had a few errors in the field, but it was mostly hits that hurt us. Mansfield was a similar story. Their girls just hit the ball in the right spots and unfortunately we
couldn’t manage to score any runs. The Hockomock League is a very tough league to play in, and I don’t want those two losses to take away from how well our team has been playing all season. [We’re] a resilient team and will come back from those losses. The girls are trying to stay confident and are working hard to improve the second half of the season.”
