Girls’ lacrosse team continue unbeaten streak in 14-14 tie
By Jeffrey CattelThe varsity girls’ lacrosse team ended its three-game wining streak when the Bulldogs tied Sharon 14-14, bringing the team’s overall record to 7-3-1.
Earlier this season, Canton decisively beat Sharon 16-6.
“One of the things we’re finding out in this league is no matter what team you play, a win is never guaranteed,” coach Chris Murtagh said.
Murtagh described the Sharon game as a battle on both sides, and attributed Sharon’s success in large part to the team’s goalie. “Their goalie played an incredible game,” he said. “We were peppering the goalie with shots, but she came through with many saves.”
Similar to past games, Canton came out strong, scoring the game’s first goals, but the lead went back and forth. Canton scored its 14th goal with less than a minute left in the game and Sharon followed with its final goal ten seconds later.
Senior captain Ally Boudreau continued as the team’s top scorer with five goals, while seniors Vicki O’Brien and Sam Smith netted two goals each. Senior Nicole Marcone, sophomores Michelle McNeil and Emma Compagna, and freshmen Meghan Lennon and Meaghan McKenna each scored one goal.
With two weeks left in the regular season, the team is focusing on making small improvements to its game play. Murtagh said the girls are focusing in practice on stopping fast break situations and putting a larger emphasis on defensive skills.
The results of Monday’s game against King Philip will appear in next week’s Citizen.
