Boys’ tennis falls, still hope for tourney

By

In the boys’ tennis team’s lone match last week, the Bulldogs fell one point shy of pulling off an upset against unbeaten North Attleboro, losing 3-2 last Thursday at home.

With the loss, Canton is 6-8 on the season and needs wins in three out of its last four matches to earn a spot in the state tournament.

In the first match of the season against North Attleboro, Canton lost 5-0, but this time around, second singles player Luke Shapiro and the first doubles team of Brian Kodzis and Matt Buckley were able to avenge losses against their respective North Attleboro opponents.

Shapiro won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, while Kodzis and Buckley combined for a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 win.

“[North Attleboro is] the strongest in the league as of right now and we really showed our improvement by beating them in areas we had lost before,” head coach Leo Nelson wrote in an e-mail to the Citizen. “[Shapiro] had a great win against a tough opponent and [Buckley] and [Kodzis] continue to dominate at their spot.”

Nelson was particularly impressed with the effort from his first doubles tandem.

“[Buckley] and [Kodzis] continue to look better and better,” Nelson wrote in an e-mail. “They are attacking the net and showing great composure in close matches.”

Even though the second doubles team of Max Weiner and Kevin Wong lost 6-1, 6-2, Nelson said he was impressed that Wong — in the midst of an “up and down season” — has put in extra time after practice to improve his play.

This week Canton hosted Stoughton on Monday, will play at Foxboro today (Thursday), and will host Cohasset on Friday.
