Girls’ tennis falls in only match of the week

~ Individual players shine in weekend tournament ~

After clinching a berth in the state tournament the week before, the CHS girls’ tennis team lost its only match of the week 3-2 at North Attleboro last Thursday. But, as head coach Sheila Conneely points out, the score of that match “does not tell the whole story.”

First singles player Keishorea Armstrong had to withdraw prior to her match because of a neck injury she sustained during warm-ups, according to Conneely. As a result, Canton had to forfeit the point, which turned out to be the decisive point in the loss.

Armstrong has been one of the most consistent performers on the team this season and delivered Canton’s only point in a 4-1 loss to North Attleboro earlier this season.

This time around, second singles player Micaela Nannery and the first doubles duo of Carol Berman and Tilly Golledge were both able to avenge three-set losses to their respective North Attleboro opponents.

A strong forehand and serve helped Nannery to a 6-3, 7-5 win. In an e-mail to the Citizen, Conneely said Nannery played “two great sets of consistent, patient tennis, using the long rallies to her advantage.”

Berman and Golledge lost the first set of their match in a tiebreak, but rebounded to win the next two sets, 6-2, 6-2, handing their doubles opponents their first loss of the season.

Berman and Golledge also competed in the South Sectional Individual Tournament, which took place over the last two weekends. Two weeks ago, the pair cruised to victory in a first round match against Marshfield and then upset the fourth-seeded Scituate doubles team, 6-4, 6-3 in the second round.

Last Saturday in the quarterfinal match against Wellesley, Berman and Golledge won the first set in a tiebreaker, but went on to drop the next two sets to end their tournament run. The match lasted three-and-a-half hours, with all three sets decided in a tiebreak.

Armstrong also advanced to the quarterfinals but was unable to compete because of her injury.

Heading into this week, Canton is 9-5 on the season. The team was scheduled to play at Stoughton on Monday and host Fontbonne Academy in a non-league match on Tuesday. Canton will host Foxboro today (Thursday).
