Man About Canton: MORAN DEDICATION THIS SUNDAY

By

DID YOU KNOW…

There will be a dedication ceremony at 1 p.m. this coming Sunday, May 23, for the James Moran Water Treatment Plant on Pecunit Street, and the K of C has donated the use of its facility at 500 Pleasant Street for the reception following the ceremony.

On another matter, the selectmen will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, May 25, to set water and sewer rates, which will take effect July 1.

Updating our recent pizza place list, we have a couple more locations in Canton where you can get a pizza — the Alfredo Aiello Italian Food Store (781-828-5600) at the corner of Washington and Turnpike streets, and Leo’s Pizzeria II (781-575-1144) across the street from Canton Junction. That now makes 20 pizza places in Canton.

MAC hears that Betty Ann Swartz plans to retire in October after working 40 years at the Canton Public Library. She is the wife of Vic Swartz, the former deputy wire inspector for the town.

The state Department of Transportation is looking into the possibility of opening a regular commuter rail station at Patriot Place in Foxboro. The proposal is dependent on the number of people who use the facility.  There is already a station servicing Gillette Stadium adjacent to Patriot Place, but it is privately owned and only used on a limited basis on game days.

The high-tech digital printing firm Dynagraf, Inc. has renewed its lease for its 100,000-square-foot headquarters and warehouse at 5 Dan Road off Route 138 in Canton.

The Golf Club Factory has opened its sales and repair business at 652 Washington Street at the corner of Revere Street in the Downtown Business District.

Things are really changing at talk radio station WRKO-AM (680). Station managers dumped ultra-conservative talkmeister Rush Limbaugh and replaced him with Charlie Manning. Limbaugh’s departure greatly upset the station’s equally conservative afternoon host Howard Carr, who reportedly began a steady stream of on-air criticisms of his WRKO employers, and as a result, the station suspended Carr for a week without pay, which reportedly cost him $16,000 to $17,000 from his estimated $1 million annual contract. Needless to say, liberal listeners are enjoying these latest developments on the Carr show.

Recent published reports say Stoughton school officials are going to allow two large advertising signs promoting the Outback Steakhouse to be installed at Stoughton High’s football field. They say it will generate some badly needed revenue to help keep student athletic fees down. Maybe the Canton School Committee should consider some advertising, too.

Canton Police Chief Ken Berkowitz and K9 Officer Scott Brown completed the recent Boston Marathon with the same time — 4:46:38. There were a total of 26,790 official entrants in the race, which was the second highest number on record, and Chief Berkowitz came in at number 20,690 and Officer Brown at 20,691.

Congratulations to Canton High senior Matt Buckley and junior Kevin Rooney for being named to the Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic boys’ hockey team.

Congratulations also go to CHS senior Erika Bornemann, who was named to the Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic girls’ basketball team, and CHS senior Allie Jones, who was named to the Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic girls’ hockey team.

The Canton American Legion Auxiliary recently selected Sara Teague and Allison Guenthner for Girls’ State at Stonehill College on June 13. They also chose Jennifer Sidney and Hannah Chenkin as alternates.

Things are changing in Stoughton. After spending 28 years on the Framingham Police Department, Paul Shastany, 55, became the latest Stoughton police chief.  We wish him luck.

MAC was happy to see residents in Easton voted to save their Historic Ames Shovel Works. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do the same here in Canton, and we looked the other way when our Ames Shovel Shop building at the DPW on Bolivar Street was torn down.

That was a classy and expensive newsletter that Congressman Stephen Lynch recently sent to everyone in his district explaining his reasons for voting against the Senate health care bill.

Human snorers will be happy to learn that they aren’t the only ones who snore. Many animals have been observed snoring, including dogs, cats, cows, oxen, sheep, leopards, elephants, camels, lions, horses, mules and zebras, to name a few.

Finally, if you’re ever in the mood to take a nice leisurely stroll, you might be interested in knowing you can actually walk across the entire state of Delaware in an afternoon. At its narrowest point, it’s just eight miles, and at its widest, it’s 35 miles.

Life is a steep grade, and we should welcome every opportunity to give our friends a lift when they need it.

This is all for now folks; see you next week.
