Softball team takes 1 of 2

It was another roller coaster week for the Canton High varsity softball team, with a huge 9-2 victory at home against Foxboro on Wednesday, followed by a crushing 10-1 trouncing at North Attleboro the following day.
The Bulldogs are now 7-8 on the season with three games remaining before the start of postseason play.
“Foxboro was a great game for us,” said coach Danielle McNamara. The first time Canton played the Warriors on April 12 the Bulldogs narrowly defeated them 3-2, and McNamara said this time around was an exciting, come-from-behind conquest.
Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit. Canton was down 2-0 going into the bottom of the third inning when Julia Murphy led off with a single, moved to second and third base on two wild pitches, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Kelly White.
Later in the inning Olivia Kenyon hit a solo homerun to tie the game at 2. Canton scored six more runs in
the fourth inning with singles from Cady Kelly, Christen Ivanoski, and Michelle Whelan, who also drove in a run. White and Olivia Murphy both added to that with RBI doubles, Kenyon had a two-run triple, and Allie Jones added an RBI triple. Canton scored its final run in the fifth inning with an RBI single from White.
“Unfortunately, North Attleboro was a different story,” McNamara said. “They were fast, bunted on us a lot, and got hits at the right time.”
The Bulldogs managed to score a run in the fifth inning when Ivanoski hit a single to left field, moved to third on a single from Julia Murphy, and scored on a misplayed ground ball hit by White.
“Although we didn’t get the runs we needed, the girls didn’t give up,” McNamara said. “They are continuing to work really hard to get ready for the tournament in a couple weeks. The game against Foxboro proved us to be a very strong offensive team.”
The girls had just one game this week — at Stoughton on Monday — and then will close out the regular season next week with home games against King Philip on May 24 and Boston Latin Academy on May 26.
