Baseball edged by Stoughton

The Canton High baseball team played well defensively, but a late rally fell short and the Bulldogs were defeated by visiting Stoughton 2-1 on May 17.

Pitcher Joey Wilkinson pitched extremely well, giving up one earned run on six hits while striking out three batters in seven innings of work.

The game featured several outstanding defensive plays by the Bulldogs, including a throw from outfielder Mike Cleary to Wilkinson to catcher Matt Nichols, and a great throw from outfielder Andrew Vinciguerra to nab a runner at third base. Coach Tom Healy noted that shortstop David Corcoran and third baseman Kevin Rooney also played well defensively.

Down 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Canton scored one run when Wilkinson walked, advanced on singles by Rooney and Cleary, and scored on a groundout.

“It was a shame we had to lose because it was a well played game and we went against a great pitcher,” Healy said.

Canton will wrap up its season today at Abington, after away games against King Philip on May 24 and Wayland May 25.
