Boys’ tennis qualifies for state tournament
By Jeffrey PicketteWith three wins last week, the CHS boys’ tennis team is tournament bound. Victories over Stoughton, Foxboro and Cohasset brought Canton’s win total to nine, the magic number of wins the Bulldogs needed to qualify for the state tournament.
After starting the season with a 3-6 record, the team has rebounded with a 6-2 mark over the last eight matches and stands at 9-8 heading into the final week of the regular season. Canton beat Stoughton 5-0 last Monday at home, with the first doubles duo of Matt Buckley and Brian Kodzis leading the way, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win over their opponent. Canton swept the season series against Stoughton, as the Black Knights failed to win an individual match in either contest.
The Bulldogs followed this up with a 5-0 win over Foxboro last Thursday on the road. Sam Biggers earned a three-set victory at the first singles position for the Bulldogs. Like the Black Knights, Foxboro failed to win an individual match in the two meetings against Canton this season.
Last Friday, Canton was able to avenge a May 7 loss to Cohasset. The Bulldogs edged their non-league opponent 3-2 behind a 6-0, 6-0 win from third singles player Scott Chamberlain. Luke Shapiro earned a three-set, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win over his previously undefeated opponent. The doubles team of Buckley and Kodzis dropped the first set of their match, but rallied to win the second and third sets, taking the match 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Canton wrapped up the regular season on Monday at King Philip.
