Boys’ track team ends regular season on high note
By Mike BergerThe CHS boys’ track team finished sixth in the Hockomock League Championships last week and ended the regular dual meet season with a good win over King Philip.
The team had good success in the sprints, hurdles and many field events. Jon Vaughn placed second in the 110-meter hurdles with a best time of 15.28 seconds; Jordan Guyton placed fourth in the 200-meter dash at 23.27 seconds; and Christian Bates finished the mile run in fourth place at 4:31.17. All three athletes had great days for Canton, scoring in multiple running and field events.
Canton relay teams also did well. The 4×100-meter relay finished third in 44.8 seconds behind Alex Cherry, Vaughn, Matt Sidney and Guyton. Finishing third at 3:33 was the 4×400-meter relay team of Marty Fauche, Chris Boughter, Cam Huber and Bates. The 4×800 relay team finished fifth at 8:51 behind Matt Kelly, Gautam Madineedi, Nikita Amelchenko and Mike Bronstein.
The high jump crew did very well with Sidney jumping 6’4” for second place, followed by Boughter and Jared Hobbs, who tied for tenth place at five feet, six inches. Canton also had success in the triple jump. Hobbs finished fourth at 41 feet, followed closely by Vaughn, sixth, 40 feet, eight inches, and Bates, 39 feet, three inches.
Other top-ten finishers in the meet for Canton included: Boughter, seventh, 200-meter dash, 23.9 seconds; Fauche, seventh, 400, 54.08 seconds; Obi Nwankwo, ninth, 400, 54.79 seconds; Huber, tenth, 800-meter run, 2:07; Tom Kerikas, tenth, 400-meter hurdles, 1:05; and Guyton, ninth, discus, 108 feet, one inch.
Other placements for Canton included: Derek Seto, 17th, 100-meter dash, 12.21 seconds; Evan Feldman, 20th, 100-meter dash, 12.46 seconds; Boughter, seventh, 200-meter dash, 23.9 seconds; Cherry, 17th, 200-meter dash, 25.02 seconds; Madineedi, mile, 15th, 5:02; Kelly, 22nd, mile, 5:10; Josh Sheehan, 18th, two mile, 11:26; John Whittemore, two mile, 11:35; Tom Kerikas, 19th, 110-meter hurdles, 20.91 seconds; Justin Saccone, 22nd, 110-meter hurdles, 22.23 seconds; Frankie Karnes, 12th, shot put, 36 feet, three inches; James Grella, 19th, 35 feet, seven inches; Karnes, 21st, discus, 82 feet, nine inches; Julian Malbranche, 12th, javelin, 120 feet, two inches; and James Frazier, 18th, javelin, 113 feet, five inches.
“We had a pretty good day but still have things to improve on for the states,” coach Ben Mattson said. “But we are moving in the right direction.”
The team ended the regular season on a high note, improving its record to 3-5 with an 84-52 win over KP.
Highlights included Sidney’s 6’6” in the high jump and second-place finish in the 100-meter dash; Vaughn’s firsts in the triple jump and 110 hurdles; Guyton’s wins in the 200 and discus; and Malbranche and Huber’s wins in the javelin and 800, respectively. Dan Alexander scored a second in the shot put, as did Fauche in the 400.
Canton also had a very successful relay day as both relay teams won the events. Christian Bates, Obi Nwankwo, Gautam Madineedi, and Huber won the 4×400, and Vaughn, Boughter, Fauche and Guyton were part of the wining 4×100 meter relay.
The Class C Meet will be held Saturday at Oliver Ames.
