Different lineups, same positive result
By Jeffrey Pickette~ Girls’ tennis at 12-5 ~
By opening last week against Stoughton and Fontbonne Academy, two of the weaker opponents on the schedule this season, CHS girls’ tennis coach Sheila Conneely was able to shuffle her lineup, but even with a different combination of players, the results were just the same: Canton wins.
The girls’ tennis team beat Stoughton 4-1 last Monday on the road and beat Fontbonne 3-2 the next day at home. Canton also topped Foxboro 3-2 last Thursday at home, capping a 3-0 week for the team. Having already qualified for the state tournament, the team improves to 12-5 on the season.
Against Stoughton, singles players Micaela Nannery, Carol Berman and Kendall Sceviour cruised to straight-set victories. The first doubles tandem of Aimee Pina and Eleni Pappadopoulus also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Filling in at third singles, freshman Alice Bronstein won the decisive match against Fontbonne, securing a 3-2 win for Canton in a non-league matchup.
Conneely said that even though first singles player Keishorea Armstrong got the “all clear” to play following her neck injury, she decided to rest her freshman standout for the Stoughton and Fontbonne matches, before Armstrong returned to action against Foxboro.
Against Foxboro, Berman was able to pick up a routine 6-1, 6-2 win at the third singles position, and the second doubles tandem of Sceviour and Eva Panciocco also won their match 6-4, 6-2.
With the teams tied 2-2, the first doubles duo of Pina and Pappadopoulus gave Canton the 3-2 win in dramatic fashion. Pina and Pappadopoulus lost the first set of their match 6-1, but rebounded to win the second set 6-2. In the third set, the pair fell behind 4-2, but won the next three games to take a 5-4 lead.
Foxboro responded by winning the next two games and taking a 6-5 lead, but like Canton, could not close out the match. Pina and Pappadopoulus were able to provide the last run, winning the next game to send the third set into a tiebreak and then winning the tiebreak 8-6, capping a 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) victory.
Canton played its last regular season match Monday against King Philip.
