Softball team suffers frustrating loss to Stoughton

The Canton High School varsity softball team fell to Stoughton in its only game last week 8-2, having previously defeated the Black Knights 7-0 on April 15.
“This season has been really up and down for us,” said coach Danielle McNamara. “We play a really great game, and then have a poor game. It’s frustrating for all of us, but the good news is we have already made the tournament. Our focus now is to prepare for that.”
Last week’s loss to Stoughton was a blow, however. Canton scored a run in the second inning when Sam Sullivan got to first on a single, moved to third on a double by Cady Kelly, and then scored on a wild pitch. The Bulldogs’ second run was brought in during the fifth inning when Julia Murphy, who scored on a misplayed ground ball hit from Kelly White, hit a triple.
“This week will be tough for us,” McNamara said. “The resiliency from this team will pull them through with a win before going to the tournament. Our team is still very capable of going far into the tournament; they know how well they can play, but it’s just a matter of staying in the game.
“Once we get behind, the confidence goes down and that’s when we tend to give up a lot of runs. Next week we need to score early and stay aggressive throughout the whole game.”
The Bulldogs played King Philip on Monday and closed out the regular season yesterday against nonleague Boston Latin Academy.
