Girls’ tennis team snaps King Philip’s three-year win streak

King Philip has had the CHS girls’ tennis team’s number over the last few seasons, but then again, riding a 61-match win streak into Canton’s regular season finale, the Warriors have pretty much dominated everyone they have played.
But last Monday, the state tournament-bound Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a 3-2 upset win over King Philip, handing the Warriors their first regular-season loss in three years.
With the victory, Canton improves to 13-5 and has won four straight matches and eight out of ten heading into the postseason.
“The team is playing the best it has all season right now,” head coach Sheila Conneely wrote in an e-mail to the Citizen. “The keys going into the tournament are to stay healthy and injury-free and to not lose focus. Both of these factors are easier said than done. The stronger teams in the [Hockomock League] really have prepped us to go deep into the tournament, so hopefully things will come together and we’ll have a good showing.”
Heading into last Monday’s matchup, Canton had lost seven straight times to King Philip, but this time around, the Bulldogs were able to capitalize on their opponent’s short-handed lineup.
King Philip was without the services of both their first and second singles players, so head coach Bob Goldberg was forced to split one of his doubles tandems — the 2010 south sectional doubles champions — and have them play singles.
“This definitely [threw] a wrench in their lineup,” Conneely admitted. “Nevertheless, it was a big win for us on Senior Day.”
Canton’s points came from first singles player Keishorea Armstrong, who beat her opponent in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3; second singles player Micaela Nannery, who won in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-2; and the first doubles duo of Carol Berman and Tilly Golledge, who like Nannery, dropped their first set but battled back to win in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
State tournament seeding was released Wednesday. See next week’s paper for postseason tennis coverage.
