Boys’ tennis team bows out of state tournament
By Jeffrey PicketteHeading into the postseason, the CHS boys’ tennis team was playing its best tennis of the season — having won six of nine matches — but Canton could not keep its run going, falling 4-1 to Old Rochester Regional High School in the first round of the MIAA Division 3 south sectional tournament last Friday on the road.
In a battle of Bulldogs, the odds were stacked against Canton. Entering the tournament with a 9-9 record, Canton was seeded 15th out of the 16 teams in its bracket, drawing a first-round matchup with 18-2 Old Rochester, the second-seeded team.
The first doubles duo of Brian Kodzis and Matt Buckley provided Canton’s only point in the loss. After dropping the first set 6-3, Kodzis and Buckley rallied to win the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Kodzis and Buckley have been a consistent force for Canton this season at first doubles, proving to be nearly unbeatable in the second half of the season. The same can be said for second singles player Luke Shapiro, who had been on a similar tear, but was unable to keep it going in the tournament. Shapiro lost 6-4, 6-2 to his opponent.
Canton dropped the other two singles matches with Sam Biggers falling 6-2, 6-2 at first singles and Scott Chamberlain losing 6-2, 6-1 at third singles. The second doubles team of Max Weiner and Kevin Wong lost as well, 6-3, 7-5.
Old Rochester advanced to the quarterfinal round and faced seventh-seeded Harwich on Monday. With the loss, Canton ends the season 9-10, a marked improvement from last season’s 4-12 record.
