Girls’ tennis team falls to top seed in tourney
By Jeffrey PicketteJust 24 hours after top-seeded Hingham swept 16th-seeded Dighton-Rehoboth in the first round of the MIAA Division 2 south sectional tournament, the Harborwomen returned to action Monday afternoon and beat Canton 5-0 in the quarterfinal round, ending the season for the CHS girls’ tennis team.
Canton, seeded eighth out of 18 teams, entered the tournament with a 13-5 record.
The Division 2 south bracket was deep this year, and particularly strong at the top — the top seven seeds combined for just 10 losses throughout the regular season.
The Bulldogs advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-2 win over ninth-seeded Bishop Feehan last Friday at home in the first round. The first four points of the match were split with rather one-sided results.
Canton’s Keishorea Armstrong and Micaela Nannery cruised to routine straight-set wins at the first two singles positions, but third singles player Eleni Pappadopoulus and the second doubles team of Eva Panciocco and Kendall Sceviour fell to their opponents in similar fashion.
Head coach Sheila Conneely was particularly impressed with Nannery’s “absolute dominance” in her 6-0, 6-1 win.
“I have never seen Micaela play the way she did on Friday — [nearly] flawless in her precision on her forehand and serve, and additionally she showcased a pretty decent backhand and forehand drop shot,” Conneely wrote in an e-mail to the Citizen.
With the match tied 2-2, Carol Berman and Tilly Golledge provided a thrilling victory at first doubles to keep Canton’s season alive. Berman and Golledge won in straight sets, but both went to tiebreakers, as the duo escaped with a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4) win.
Against Hingham in the quarterfinal, Canton lost 5-0, with each player dropping their respective match in straight sets.
Hingham improves to 21-1 with the win and has now swept eight straight matches. The loss snaps Canton’s five-match win streak.
The Bulldogs end the season with a 14-6 record, their best mark since 2006.
“I’m definitely proud of how my girls played this season,” Conneely wrote in an e-mail. “We will miss the five seniors [Berman, Golledge, Panciocco, Sceviour and Divya Harpalani] — they contributed great leadership, awesome tennis, and made our season very fun.”
