Canton Post 24 American Legion baseball team ready for season
By Mike BergerFollowing several rainouts, the Canton American League Post 24 baseball team is beginning its season this week with several games in hopes of improving upon last year’s record of 8-14.
The team is made up of high school and first-year college players from Canton and Sharon.
Coached for the second year by Junior Medina, the team has several players returning from last year, including Canton High’s Matt Nickel, Matt Bernstein, Joey Wilkinson, John McGonigle, as well as Brennan Sullivan, who attends Xaverian, Trevor Boyce (Babson College), Garrett Ewanoski (Catholic Memorial), and former CHS player Rob McCarty.
Sharon players returning include: Chris Puliafico, Alex Abboud, Dave Zabinsky, Adam Freedman, Brad Asnes, Dave Roberto,Dave Krakovsky and Dan Friedman.
Starting pitchers will include Wilkinson, Roberto, Krakovsky, Sullivan and Friedman. McCarty is expected to be the team’s closer.
“This year’s team looks very strong in the field and hitting-wise, and the pitching looks very strong as well if everyone comes in healthy and ready to go at full speed,” said Medina, who is optimistic about the season.
The team was due to host Norfolk and Norwood on June 15 and 16 before traveling to Foxboro tomorrow at 5:55 p.m., to Westwood on Sunday at 5 p.m., and to Needham on June 22 at 5:55 p.m.
