Cranberry A’s hurt by season-ending injury to key pitcher Greg Lyons
By Mike BergerA hard line drive that broke the hand of pitcher Greg Lyons last week ended the season for the Canton resident, who was expected to be a starting pitcher for the Canton Athletics.The team is looking to improve upon last year’s record of 10-15.
The A’s were 1-5 after two weeks of play. Games have been close, with good pitching but not much hitting.
The A’s play in the summer Cranberry League, which is made up of college players and players who continue to play beyond college. The league has many South Shore locations, including Braintree, Rockland, Brockton, Plymouth, Middleboro, and Weymouth.
The team’s general manager is Cab Devoll and the coach is Kee Arguimbeau. Cranberry League Hall of Famer Bob Gibson Jr., who played in the Cranberry League for 15 years and was a star player for Canton High, is a new assistant coach. A baseball field at CHS is named for his father, Bob Gibson, Senior.
The team has many Canton players as well as former high school players from Sharon and Norwood.
Besides Lyons, Canton players include pitcher Chris Smith, first baseman Bill Curry, third baseman Bill Murray, and outfielder Pat Bogue.
Returning players include captain/catcher Joe Belmosto, outfielder Steve Delanian, pitcher Tim Bonham, infielder Brendan Mahoney, outfielder Mike Trachtenberg, designated hitter Alex Rossi (who is recuperating from a rotator cuff injury), infielder Chris Fagan, shortstop Chris Dominguez, and pitcher Joe Caparotta.
New to the team this year are former Canton Legion pitcher Andrew Poliferno and Legion infielder Ryan Melaugh of Sharon, as well as Paul Toland of Weymouth, who plays for the University of Rochester, Bill Humphrey of Easton (Merrimack College), Tyler Hitchcock of Abington (Endicott College), Brian Williams of Norwood (Boston College), Mark Nelson of Walpole (Colby College), and Corey Burtman of Norwood (Mass College of Liberal Arts).
The A’s were due to travel to Rockland this Tuesday and Braintree on Wednesday. Canton will have five straight home games beginning today at 6 p.m. at CHS. Tomorrow they host Brockton at 2:30 p.m., and Sunday they play a doubleheader against Plymouth beginning at 11 a.m.
