Canton A’s win second game but lose top hitter

By

Stung by the loss of one of the team’s best pitchers in Canton’s Greg Lyons, the Canton Athletics were also hurt last week by the loss of Steve Delanian, one of their best hitters.

A Brockton resident, Delanian is normally an outfielder but was filling in at second base when he dove for a ball and broke his finger. Like Lyons, he will be lost for the remainder of the season.

After three weeks of play, the A’s are 2-9 but are competitive despite the injuries. In last week’s action, the A’s lost to Plymouth 4-2, lost twice to league-leading Braintree, 4-3 and 17-1, and were shut out by Rockland 5-0.

In its only victory last week, Canton beat Brockton 10-4 as Tyler Hitchcock pitched a six hitter in a complete game victory. Bill Curry and Bill Murray, both of Canton, each had two hits with Curry knocking in two runs. Brian Williams had three hits and Chris Fagan had two hits in Canton’s best hitting day of the season. Williams is leading the team with a batting average over .350.

Cab Devoll, the team’s general manager, reported that Bill Humphrey has pitched well in two games against Plymouth, and new pitcher Paul Tolland gave up five hits in a close loss to Braintree.

The second game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon was called in the third inning because of thunderstorms with the A’s in a 0-0 pitching duel with Plymouth. The game will be rescheduled.

The team was scheduled to host Brockton on June 21 and Foxboro on Saturday, travel to Easton for a doubleheader starting at noon on Sunday, then host Weymouth on Monday, June 28, at 6 p.m.
