Tolland’s pitching, Canton bats lift Canton A’s to 2 wins

The Canton A’s improved to 4-11 after the team won two games last week, thanks to the pitching of Paul Tolland and the bats of  Cory Burkman and Canton’s Pat Bogue, Bill Murray, and Billy Curry. In Cranberry League action last week, the A’s beat Brockton 20-2 and upset Easton 2-1. They also lost to Easton 9-1 and to Foxboro 5-2.

According to A’s head coach Kee Arguimbeau, Tolland was dominant against Easton and pitched one of the best games he has seen, limiting the powerful Huskies to five hits with five strikeouts and zero walks. Tolland, who played for Weymouth and the University of Rochester, has been the starter in three of the four A’s victories.

Canton got its two runs in the win over Easton from an RBI-double by Bogue and a single by Murray. The A’s didn’t do much in the first game of the doubleheader, however, as the Huskies won when the eight-run slaughter rule was revoked. Canton was also shorthanded, with Mark Nelson, who is normally a relief pitcher, filling in at catcher.

In the 20-2 win over Brockton, Burkman had five hits and four RBIs and Tolland gave up two runs over five strong innings. Canton’s Chris Smith and Nelson didn’t allow any runs in relief.

In an emergency start against Foxboro, Burkman hurled four decent innings despite several A’s errors. Bogue had a two-run double, Curry had a double, and player-coach Bob DeMarco, 44 years old, had a single.

The A’s had three home games remaining before the holiday break, with games scheduled for June 28 against Weymouth, June 30 against Braintree, and July 1 (today) at 6 p.m. against Brockton.
