Boys’ cross country finishes 3rd in Vineyard meet
By Mike BergerThe Canton High boys’ cross country team finished third in a nine-team competition, with four of the top 40 runners in the 3.1-mile Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Cross Country Invitational race, held at Oak Bluffs on September 11.
Senior Jimmy Paschal finished sixth overall and was Canton’s top runner, finishing in 17:11.52 — seconds away from course winner Jason Angell of Duxbury.
Not far away from Paschal was senior Mike Bronstein at 17:31, followed by senior Josh Sheehan (16th, 17:54) and senior Saeed Vossoughi (27th, 18:29). A trio of CHS runners finished 34-36, including senior Chad Cohen, 19:28; junior Kevin O’Donnell, 19:30; and senior Chris Haidul, 19:31.
In the junior varsity race, Canton finished in first place with nine runners in the top 20. The Bulldogs’ top runner was junior Sean Akey, finishing third overall at 19:29. He was followed by sophomore Joe Sabatino, fifth, 19:47; sophomore Scot Buresh, 11th, 20:10; junior Dave Rosenberg, 12th, 20:12; senior Teagan McClintock, 13th, 20:14; junior John Whittemore, 15th, 20:32; junior Ethan Eastwood, 17th, 20:34; senior Kevin Connolly, 18th, 20:38; and senior Luke Hanna, 20th, 21:12.
Coach Chris Elgar said the entire team ran well, with most runners posting huge time improvements from last year. “There were just more teams there this year and Martha’s Vineyard wanted it real bad and earned it,” he said. Earlier last week, CHS participated in the Hockomock League Jamboree and finished fifth overall out of ten teams.
The best performer in the jamboree was Paschal who ran a very fast 7.49 over 1.5 miles. Canton’s other top runners included Bronstein, 8:02, Sheehan, 8:11, Vossoughi, 8:42, and Cohen, 8:58.
