CHS cross country teams split in first home meet
By Mike BergerThe scores were the same, but the CHS boys’ cross country team was the winner in a 24-31 meet against Foxboro, while the girls lost to their Warrior counterparts by the same margin in the first dual meet of the year.
“Being on our home course, we went into the meet expecting to be very aggressive and that is exactly what happened, giving us an early cushion that Foxboro could not come back from,” boys’ coach Chris Elgar said. The Bulldogs’ top four finished second, third, fourth, and sixth.
Junior Brendan Sullivan was Canton’s top runner, finishing the 2.5-mile course in 13:29. Jimmy Paschal finished second at 13:45, followed by Mike Bronstein at 14:09, Josh Sheehan at 14:12, and Saeed Vossoughi at 14:40. Completing Canton’s top five was Kevin O’Donnell, who finished at 15:30. The remaining varsity runners were Sean Akey at 15:39 and Chad Cohen at 15:55.
Elgar noted that Zach Levenson and Mike Rota had nice improvements from a year ago, by 72 and 34 seconds, respectively. The top freshmen for the race were Peter Hartfiel, who finished in 18 minutes, just a few steps ahead of Dan Bronstein.
For the girls, Foxboro finished first, third, fourth, sixth, and 11th, while Canton placed second, fifth, and seventh.
Sophomore Kelsey Sayers was Canton’s top runner as she finished second with a great time of 17:52 — 20 seconds behind the leader. Senior Kate D’Orazio finished fifth at 18:13, followed by senior Sara Teague, seventh, 18:48; sophomore Alyce Bronstein, eighth, 19:06; junior Mairead Bagley, ninth, 19:12; and junior Micaela Nannery, 10th, 19:14.
Coach Peter Boucher said the difference in the meet was the finish of the third runners.
“We are getting better each week,” he noted. “We had 12 of the top 20 runners.” Boucher noted the performance of Kate McClintock, who finished 13th at 19:46, and freshman Courtney Loughrane, who finished 16th at 19:57.
Both teams were scheduled to face Sharon in an away meet on September 21 and will host Oliver Ames on Tuesday, September 28, at 3:45 p.m.
