Girls’ soccer team splits – loses to Bishop Feehan and beats OA
By Jeffrey CattelThe Canton High School girls’ soccer team split the week with a 1-0 loss to Bishop Feehan and a 1-0 win over Oliver Ames, bringing the Bulldogs’ record to 1-2.
According to coach Paul Turner, the team started slow in the game against Bishop Feehan and looked nervous. “It took us 20 minutes to settle down, and then we looked better,” he said.
Bishop Feehan scored a goal with 18 minutes left in the game, despite senior goalie Erin Russell’s strong performance in net. Turner said the girls spent the last 15 minutes throwing everything they had at Feehan, but were unsuccessful in scoring the equalizer.
The girls came out strong from the get-go in the game against Oliver Ames, traditionally a powerhouse in the Hockomock League.
Junior Kensey Waterman netted a goal 15 minutes into the first half, and the Bulldogs maintained the single-goal lead throughout the game.
“It was a hard-fought game that we deserved to win,” Turner said. “It was definitely a relief to get one in the win column.”
During the second week of play, the girls were able to improve their organization on the field, a major downfall in their first game of the season against Duxbury.
Turner said there’s room for improvement, however, especially with their communication on the field.
“Simple talking and communicating would really help us,” Turner said. “Communicating often comes with confidence, and I hope we can use the confidence our first win gave us to use as a springboard into the rest of the season.”
