CHS golf team veterans step up

By

With a fairly young roster, CHS golf coach Jim Spillane has said he needs his veterans to come through this season, which — following a season-opening loss to Sharon — they did in a 166-183 win against Stoughton at the Easton Country Club.

With par on the nine-hole course a 36, Canton’s two seniors, Glen Kaplan and Brian Gorham, had two great scores of 40 and 41, respectively, while junior Kevin Marchand recorded a 40. Canton’s next scorer was sophomore Rich Nee with a 45.

“The kids played well and our veterans played much better than our opening day,” Spillane said. “We need the captains’ experience to score well every match.”

Spillane’s next goal is to get the overall team score at 160 or below. “If you are at 160 or below,” he said, “you have a very good chance at winning.”

Earlier in the week, Canton lost to Sharon’s Eagles 163-174 on their par-36 nine-hole course. Canton’s top scorer was junior Mike Lamir at 42, with scores of 44 turned in by junior Mike Reardon, sophomore J.C Marcone, and Nee.

Describing the pin placements as “tricky,” Spillane said most of his golfers struggled with the Sharon course.

Canton had three consecutive away matches this week: September 20 against King Philip, September 21 at Mansfield, and September 22 against Oliver Ames. Canton’s first home match at the Blue Hill Country Club is against OA on Tuesday, September 28.
