CHS field hockey team improves to 4-0
By Jeffrey CattelWith two dominating performances against Stoughton and Sharon, the Canton High field hockey team continued its undefeated, shutout streak, improving to 4-0 on the season.
The girls started off the week with a 4-0 win against Stoughton. Scorers included senior Emily Dillon with two goals and juniors Stephanie Rizzitano and Becky Lazaro with one goal each.
The team performed equally well in a 5-0 win against Sharon. Senior Cady Kelly, juniors Rizzitano and Haley Gaughan, and freshmen Meaghan McKenna and Alex Dillon netted one goal each.
Both games were played on grass, which required the team to adjust its typically turf-based game play. Coach Fior Griffin explained that grass is a much more unpredictable surface, with grass that is often long or uneven, resulting in a slower game play and necessitating many shorter passes. Defense is also more difficult, Griffin said, because the ball is more likely to take a bad hop with a surface covered with divots.
“It took us a few minutes to adjust to the new surface in the game against Stoughton,” Griffin said, “but we adjusted quickly and then were ready from the beginning of the Sharon game.”
Because the Bulldogs netted a high number of goals in the first half of both games, Griffin was able to play her reserves for longer stretches.
“We tried to get a lot of the younger kids in with playing time,” Griffin said. “They practice with us, but many play JV. The pace between JV and varsity is very different.”
Additionally, senior goalie Sarah Healey got a break when senior Olivia Kenyon and junior Kolleen White split the position in the second half in both games.
“It’s great because this gives me an opportunity to see them play in a less stressful situation and ensure we have depth on the bench later in the season,” Griffin said.
