CHS golfers end long road stretch with big win over OA
By Mike BergerAfter opening the season with five consecutive road matches, CHS head coach Jim Spillane and his young golfers are looking forward to the next group of matches at home at the Blue Hill Country Club.
Fortunately for the Bulldogs, they get to return home on a winning note after an exciting 199-202 victory over Oliver Ames to bring their early season record to 2-3. After Canton tied the score at 159, the match came down to the fifth-lowest score — a 40 by CHS sophomore Rich Nee.
Spillane said the win represented two important milestones as it not only marked the team’s second win on the road this year, but it was also the first time the team’s top four golfers had shot below 160.
Playing at Pine Oaks in Easton with a par 34, junior Kevin Marchand had the lowest score of the game with a 38, and Spillane said he continues to improve each week. Seniors Glenn Kaplan and Bryan Gorham each scored a 40, as did junior Mike Lamir.
Earlier in the week, the Bulldogs fell to undefeated Mansfield 159-170. Lamir had the best score for the team with a 38 on a par-36 course, while Marchand and Kaplan each had a 42.
Canton also lost at King Philip 171-164. Junior Mike Reardon was the team’s top scorer with a 40 on a par-36 course. Canton’s other low scores were turned in by sophomore JC Marcone with a 41 and Lamir with a 44.
The Bulldogs had a busy week this week with four consecutive matches, beginning Monday on the road at North Attleboro, followed by Tuesday and Wednesday at home versus Oliver Ames and Sharon, respectively, and today (Thursday) at Foxboro.
