Canton celebrated running and fitness Saturday morning with a record 750 runners participating in the sixth annual Canton Homecoming Road Race, hosted by Reebok and the Canton Association of Business and Industries.

Race planners estimate that the event raised $52,000, with the proceeds benefiting many non-profit organizations, such as the Mass. Hospital School, the Clarke School for the Deaf, the Canton recreation, fire and police departments, the Canton Public Schools, the Canton Food Pantry, and Blue Hills Regional Technical School.

The first race started at 8:30 with the temperature at 76 degrees, and when the 10K race was completed by 10:45, temperatures were well into the 80s.

The annual event, which began six years ago with about 300 runners, has grown each year, with this year’s total surpassing 2009 by 200 runners. Nine businesses competed in this year’s Corporate Challenge, which was won by Reebok. Other participating corporations included NSTAR Fitness, OneBeacon Insurance, Computershare, Bank of Canton, Mass. Hospital School, Dunkin’ Brands, Humboldt Storage, and a church from Roxbury. Two sports clubs also competed and Fuzion came away the winner, besting a group from Elite.

Canton High School’s cross country teams were well represented Saturday, with many finishing in the top three of their age groups. Boys’ cross country coach Chris Elgar ran the 5K and finished in the top ten. CHS senior Chad Cohen organized for the second year a drive to benefit homeless veterans and Father Bill’s. He skipped Senior Breakfast, held earlier Saturday morning, to run and meet members of the organization.

The 5K finish was exciting as Cambridge resident Dan Mazzocco, who works for Reebok, edged Ed Gardner in less than a second to win the race at 16:27, a very fast time for the 3.1-mile race. Canton’s Kara Leonard was the first woman finisher at 19:20.

John Phelps of Mansfield won easily in the 6.2-mile 10K race, finishing at 36:54. Lisa Kaplan of Watertown was the first woman finisher at 38:06.

Nathan Witala was the winner of the 5K wheelchair race, which he finished in 1:06.36, and 8-year-old Ben Guerini won the one-mile Fun Run. Anne Marie McDonald, 70, was the oldest woman to run, and Joseph Stavla, 77, was the oldest man.
